Why move to Chicago

Although Chicagoans often complain about the city’s long winters and congested traffic, it’s undeniable that Chicago is one of the best cities in the nation.

It has a vibrant downtown core, outstanding entertainment districts, and plenty of parks right in the urban center.

People from across the nation are relocating to Chicago to experience everything this wonderful city has to offer.

Here are some of the reasons why people are moving to Chicago:

Lower Cost of Living

Oftentimes, living in a big city means you sacrifice affordability. This is true especially for places like Los Angeles and New York.

But in Chicago, you can have your cake and eat it too.

Even though Chicago is the third largest urban center in the nation, the cost of living is relatively low.

In fact, the median home price is only $359,000, which is surprisingly low in comparison to other large cities. For instance, the average home price in L.A. is $618,000 and New York is $676,000.

Not only is the city’s real estate market reasonable, its overall cost of living is as well.

When taking into account the price of groceries, transportation, and other everyday expenses, Chicagoans pay less relative to other big American cities.

Growing Industries and Career Opportunities

For a few years, Chicago’s job market saw a slight decline, but this past year has turned it around stronger than ever.

There is an uptick in career opportunities throughout the city as both large and small companies make Chicago their home.

There are plenty of start-up tech companies arising in the city that promise creative work spaces where employees can innovate and grow.

Chicago is also the headquarters for industry-leading companies, like Dyson and Google. Powerhouse businesses like these bring plenty of jobs, which attracts tons of young professionals to the city.

Chicago’s career opportunities aren’t limited to technology and business, though. The city has a plethora of career paths in health care, hospitality, education, construction, and more.

Terrific Entertainment and Nightlife

One of the top reasons why people move to Chicago is because it has terrific entertainment and nightlife.

The downtown core is filled with trendy restaurants, hip bars, and exclusive nightclubs that gives you something to do every night of the week.

If bar hopping until four in the morning isn’t your thing, Chicago has a long list of other entertainment options to choose from.

The city’s Park District is a popular place to go to catch live music events or an outdoor movie in the summertime. This area also has events, like yoga classes, volleyball leagues, stargazing walks, and fishing at Northerly Island. No matter what your interests are, you can find something to do in the Park District.

Music lovers also choose to live in Chicago for its top-rated music festivals, like Lollapalooza, Pitchfork, and Chicago Jazz Festival.

Abundance of Natural Landscapes

Despite being a massive urban center, Chicago has an abundance of natural landscapes.

In fact, the city has 18.5 miles of lakefront trails, 600 parks, and 70 nature and bird sanctuaries. All of this adds up to 8,800 acres of scenic green space.

The city has made a commitment to ensure every child is within a 10-minute walk to a park or playground, so you can expect a wide array of community green spaces and parks.

Some of the newest additions to the city are Wild Mile, 312 River Run, and Ping Tom Memorial Park, which offer gorgeous, natural spaces for Chicagoans to hang out in the summertime.

The city is also working to transform the old rail tracks into linear parks.

Reliable Transportation

One of the top things people complain about when living in a big city is that public transportation is slow and unreliable.

But, this is not the case in Chicago.

Chicago takes pride in its reliable public transportation, with buses and trains actually arriving when they say they will.

The city also makes it incredibly easy to get around. With the combination of the subway lines and bus routes, you can get just about anywhere with transit.

If you don’t want to use transit, getting around by foot is another great options. Chicago is extremely walkable with its flat terrain and clean sidewalks.

You’ll also find you won’t get lost because of the city’s grid pattern that makes it easy to get just about anywhere without a map.
