Montgomery Ward Building Before Conversion
River North has a long and rich history that is woven into Chicago's story with an iron thread.
Contructed in 1972, The Montgomery was designed by architect Minoru Yamasaki to serve as the headquarters for the Montgomery Ward Company.
The original Montgomery Ward was founded a century before The Montgomery was built, but Aaron Montgomery Ward and Andrew Ward. This would be the beginning of a quintessential American retail enterprise that would be one of the strongest and longest running retailers in American history.
Their contributions include the introduction of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, a story and poem written by Montgomery Ward staff copywriter as part of a Christmas campaign. They also were one of the first retailers to bring IBM and Apple to consumers through a retail setting. Their biggest contribution was moving from a catalogue and mail order business to revolutionizing the retail world.
Minoru Yamasaki was a Seattle-born architect is one of the most celebrated builders in the United States.
Yamasaki not only designed The Montgomery Ward building, but is better known for designing the original World Trade Center in New York City.
This multiple-winner of the American Institute of Architects First Honor Award, was also featured on the cover of TIME magazine at the height of his career.
He is credited with the design of many other large scale commericial projects all over the country, including:

This new-found elegance was widely publicized as this commericial-to-residentional transformation took place, officially completed in 2005.
