Where To Look

Chicago Townhouse Real Estate

So, now that you’re here, what can you really expect from a townhouse in Chicago? Well, to answer that question, let’s first look at where you might have the most success finding Chicago townhomes for sale. Of course downtown neighborhoods like Streeterville or The Loop are loaded with some of Chicago’s most stately high-rises and commercial developments, so finding a townhome in these area’s isn’t likely. Instead, most home buyers will have to head just a little further north to the Gold Coast, Old Town, Lincoln Park, or Lakeview to find the healthiest inventory of active townhouses for sale.

As one of Chicago’s oldest neighborhoods, the Gold Coast is where you’ll find plenty of historic brownstones and row homes on the market, which yes, are included in the “townhome” category. Although also some of the city’s most expensive properties, few will argue the appeal and desirability behind many such properties, even if there needs to be a few updates made here or there to the interior.

Lincoln Park also has its fair share of row home and brownstone style townhomes, especially around DePaul, but as one of the city’s largest neighborhoods, lots of different townhouse styles and designs can also be found throughout the north side, including in Lakeview and beyond.

North of downtown isn’t the only place to look for a Chicago townhome, however. The South Loop—one of Chicago’s fastest growing downtown neighborhoods—also have a number of townhome developments as well, making it a great place to begin your search if you’re looking for a newer construction townhouse, or even something that was just built within the last 10 to 15 years.

Types of Chicago Townhomes

As alluded to above, townhouses in Chicago take on any number of styles and designs, ranging from traditional looking two-level townhomes to all the historic townhouses found within some of the Windy City’s most established neighborhoods. If you’re looking for a townhouse with a little more of a modern or contemporary flair, neighborhoods like Bucktown, Wicker Park, and even a little bit in Lakeview and Lincoln Park have seen plenty such developments pop up in recent years and even still today.

Even Chicago’s New Eastside neighborhood, which is one of the newest downtown neighborhoods to take shape, also has a select number of townhouse units, but when it comes to the Row Homes in Lakeshore East, expect to pay a pretty penny, if you’re lucky enough to find one on the open market that is.
